Communities
that have experienced social and economic decay have as
one of their characteristics fragmentation within the confines
of the neighborhood itself. Rather than coalescing and
building, what occurs all too often is precisely the opposite
-- polarization and abandonment. To address this issue,
the First Baptist Community Development Corporation has
facilitated the establishment of the Renaissance Neighborhood
Association, a community structure that will lead and manage
the community revitalization initiative. The Association
accommodates development action that coordinates the utilization
of existing resources, mobilizes and trains the primary
stakeholders in healthy neighborhood action and interaction
and facilitate problem-solving on the local level. The
overall goal of this neighborhood enterprise component
is the empowerment of the residents and business owners
with the knowledge, skills, and incentives necessary to
improve their quality of life and thereby revitalize their
community.
