Safety
The Internet, basically, is the largest library, phone
book, instructional manual, billboard, newspaper, retail
store in the history of humanity!! The Internet is the
combination of many computers linked together, each
with a specific address i.e. your home address and each
holding specific information pertaining to a product
or service, i.e. an advance form of the yellow pages.
The Internet is a powerful tool for learning and shouldn't
be taken lightly. WE HAVE TO KEEP UP IN ORDER TO SUCCEED!
However,
there are undoubtedly other sites that by default are
not filtered out. Sex, drugs, gambling and even cult
sites share their space on the web and YOU as a parent
or adult should be aware of them. Don't fear but be
aware!! As the Internet expands everyday, safety is
the primary issue that most people have. "How do
I keep the kids off dirty sites and away from the crazies!?!?"
With the demand comes supply. This is a short list of
sites that offers different degrees of FILTERING (the
process of blocking access to restricted web sites):
Filtering
is a great tool of prevention. Kids will wander but
if they don't have access, they can't wander.
Search
Engines
You may be asking yourself, "how did I get all
this info about filtering and how did he get so smart?!"
There are tools on the web called "search engines",
web sites dedicated to help you find whatever you want.
In a sense, they're the directories (white pages) to
the Internet. For
example,
go to www.google.com.
At the search line, type in "sweet potato pie."
Hit go and in less than two seconds you'll have thousands
of sites with the reference "sweet potato pie".
This is just one of the hundreds of engines that are
designed to help you navigate through the web. USE THEM!!
Electronic
Mail
Thank God for email! Email is the #1 reason billions
and billions of people access the web each day. Electronic
mail is the sending of typed messages, pictures, and
even sound via your computer to another computer, anywhere
in the world. You can send messages to your sister in
Texas. She'll receive it in a matter of minutes, and
best of all, there's no long distance phone charge.
The possibilities are endless. Send your favorite Young
Adult Choir song to your brother in North Carolina.
He'll be listening to it by the time you get home from
church. You say the price for such a service is too
much for the common person, right? Wrong, hotmail.com,
blackplanet.com, msn.com, aol.com are just a few of
the many sites that offer free email service. Take advantage
of this great medium of communication.
Well
that's all for now! In the next article, we'll get into
the machine itself. Talking about some of the many components
inside your computer. Just think. In no time you'll
be tearing your computer apart, only to build it back
bigger and better!
